Walking your dog in the dark: be seen, stay safe

In autumn and winter many walks happen before sunrise or after sunset. A few simple habits make sure drivers and cyclists see both of you in time.

Why being seen matters

A dark dog on a dark road is very hard to spot, even under street lights. Headlights, reflections and the glare of oncoming traffic all make it harder.

  • A driver on dipped headlights may notice a walker without a reflector only from about 50 metres away. With a reflector, the same person can be seen from up to about 350 metres.
  • Street lights do not replace a reflector. A dog can disappear into the shadows between them.
  • Your dog needs to be seen as well as you. They are often the first one to step towards the road.

A reflector and a light, together

The safest combination is reflective material plus an active light, visible from several directions.

  • A reflector shines when headlights hit it. A light makes you visible even before that.
  • Make sure the gear can be seen from the front, the back and both sides.
  • Reflective collars, harnesses and vests, LED collars and tags, and light-up leads all help. A vest suits dogs with a long or thick coat, where a collar can vanish into the fur.
  • A reflector or light on the lead helps drivers and cyclists notice you and your dog as a pair.

Choosing gear that fits

  • Pick the right size for your dog. The gear should stay in place without restricting movement.
  • Choose a colour that stands out from your dog's coat instead of blending into it.
  • Wear something bright or reflective yourself, and take a torch so you can see where you both step.

Check your gear before the dark season

  • Reflectors fade and lose their effect over time. Test old ones in the dark and replace any that are scratched or faded.
  • Charge the light or change its batteries before the walk, and make sure it stays attached all the way.

If your dog gets lost after dark

  • Make sure your dog is microchipped and wears an ID tag with your phone number.
